J's @ 636

Best Western Parkmore Hotel & Leisure Club, 636 Yarm Road, Eaglescliffe, Stockton-on-Tees, TS16 0DH

Situated on the outskirts of the picturesque boutique town of Yarm, The Parkmore Hotel was originally built as a private house for the family of a wealthy shipbuilder. They have recently opened their refurbished restaurant J's @ 636 with a completely new look, incorporating high back chairs, contemporary furniture, exciting crockery and ornate glassware, all married to the service and food, which is delivered by attentive staff. You could try their warm poached pear salad, served with Yorkshire blue cheese, rocket and drizzled with an aromatic walnut oil to start, followed by the slow roasted belly of County Durham pork, with seared scallop, bok choi, glazed apple, celeriac sauce and a honey and black pepper jus, and finally indulge your sweet tooth with a salad of rhubarb confit with candied fennel and mascarpone ice cream.

REVIEWS OF J's @ 636

Sue from Middlesbrough (18 May 2009)

I have eaten there at least half a dozen times and have never been disappointed. The food is truly superb. The most difficult thing is deciding what to choose, everything on the menu sounds so good. On my last visit earlier this month, I chose the scallops to start, beautiful, then had the grilled mixed fish, absolutely fantastic, and then the assiette for dessert. This is a must for anyone who can't make a decision as to what to have for dessert, it is a selection of different things for you to try. It is supposed to be shared by 2 people but they are very generous portions. Everything is homemade, from the bread you get at the start to the desserts at the end, including the sorbet and everything is so beautifully presented. The service is also excellent; staff are attentive without being over intrusive. The current owners have made a huge improvement to the restaurant and it is a lovely place to enjoy a fabulous meal. Being from Middlesbrough I have eaten at many restaurants in and around the area and I can honestly say the food here is the best I've had.

Simon Kershaw (13 May 2009)

It was not an obvious choice for a Saturday evening meal, but do not be misled, the menu was the first surprise - very well balanced with dishes to suit every palate. Not often I am spoilt for choice but I went for the ham hock terrine which was delicious, slightly rustic but all the better for it, well seasoned and beautifully presented. My wife plumped for the camembert in the box and judging from her silence it was just right as sometimes the simple things can be done badly. For my main course a seafood medley was generous in its portion and cooked just right, not over done and tasteless, but fresh clean and utterly delicious. Julia had the pork with great crackling and said it was really tasty. Normally by this stage we would have retired beaten by mediocrity, however we decided after the great starter and main we would chance our arm at desserts and went for the assiette, wow! All obviously homemade and done brilliantly from the light fluffy soufflé to the Bakewell tart and all eaten with relish until not a crumb was left. Definitely one to watch and a must to try, you will not be disappointed, we will certainly be back.
