JSW Description
Very much a neighbourhood restaurant (every community should have one). The modus operandi is straightforward. There are four dishes per course at both lunch and dinner, no supplements and no limitation on numbers of courses. Good points for the general standard of cooking include a choice of robust ingredients that lend themselves to a richness of flavours. The pasta is homemade and almost unrecognisable from the dreary stuff so often on the shelves. Bresse chickens and fish from Cornwall are also a marked improvement on what has become all too often the depressing norm. The wine list is serious stuff, with plenty of sound choice below £20 and large glasses at £3.50. The country needs more places like this.

We are regular visitors to JSW in Petersfield. The 30 mile round trip is worth it to experience the exquisite food and divine wines. Despite a short menu, four choices for each course, we can always be certain of finding some old favourites. Scallops on a bed of cauliflower puree sitting comfortably alongside new dishes, a chocolate and olive oil confection, every time we visit. The innovative menu is complemented by an extensive wine list catering to every taste and budget. It's definitely worth a visit.

I booked a table for my wife and son to celebrate my wife’s birthday and can confirm that the food is outstanding. However, I felt the staff have no idea what to do when the food is served and how to treat customers. I asked for a glass of Rosie wine for my wife, the waitress went away and returned stating that they don't do Rosie by the glass. We then chose a white wine and again she confirmed they did not do this wine by the glass and then returned with the wine list and said ' I’ve been told to give you this’ and then walked away. If the waitress had any knowledge she could have made a simple statement such as 'I'm sorry sir we do not offer Rosie by the glass however, these are the wines that are available'. What was nearly a wonderful night was, in my view, tainted by employing staff who were clearly out of their depth. I suggest they try to train them before throwing them in at the deep end. I’d give them 5 out 10 and maybe should try harder if they want another star.
