Move over tacky décor, paper lanterns and paraphernalia on the walls because here is a stylish restaurant offering Mayfair 'gastronauts' some of the finest Szechwan cuisine. Kai displays a love of traditional Chinese fare coupled with the desire to continually redefine the boundaries of Chinese cuisine. The menu follows this theme with comfort favourites that never tire and dynamic new fusions that reflect the energy of the kitchen. Have your Peking duck carved in front of you or savour the famous 'Buddha jumps over the wall' soup before moving on to taste the 'drunken phoenix on a scented tree', roasted chicken marinated with a fragrant infusion of cinnamon bark and Chinese wine.

The waist-conscious offering of ostrich pan-fried cooked with three varieties chillies is a great alternative to beef.

The team at Kai believe that a meal should be enjoyed not once but thrice - in anticipation, consumption and remembrance.

REVIEWS OF Kai Mayfair

Ashes (5 July 2008)

The food at Kai Mayfair has no comparison. We had the wasabi prawns to start, these were slightly crunchy and full of flavour and the Peking duck to follow, I watched as they artfully hand rolled the pancakes for us. The flavours that followed were rich and fresh, it’s definitely worth going there for the duck alone. The next course we left in the hands of the capable and charismatic manager who selected a range of dishes, the highlight being the sea bass. Feeling satisfied we asked for the cheque and were surprised by a cauldron of smoke, which soon revealed chocolates beneath. What an end to a great night and we will be back.
