Kenza

10 Devonshire Square, London, EC2M 4YP

If you like Levant, Levantine and Pasha - the restaurants that is - you'll rave about Kenza, nice and handy for Liverpool Street tube, and full of Middle Eastern magic, including the incense and rose petals. Colourful and exotic furnishings add to the mystique, and if all that is not enough there are belly dancers who entertain in their own inimitable and very effective way. Starting with their signature meal let your mind revolve round Muhammar, a whole lamb shoulder, slowly roasted with figs, apricots, prunes and dates before being served with cinnamon couscous and sultanas. Not unsurprisingly this is for 2 people and it absolutely delicious. Their other tagine embraces chicken, or there is a classic moussaka with aubergines in tomato sauce, onions, garlic and chickpeas.

Kenza is notable for its feasts. The Mashawy offers a choice of eight starters, with a main course of charcoal grilled spiced minced lamb, skewers of marinated lamb, chicken and quails with watercress, red onions, mint, parsley and sumar salad, followed by a choice of two desserts.

Good house wine at £19 a bottle, £4.50 a glass completes a potentially great meal.

The range of food here is truly impressive - no wonder this group of restaurants is mopping up the business wherever they open.

REVIEWS OF Kenza

CJ (24 February 2009)

A group of 50 of us went to Kenza for a wedding reception. We had the set menu for £36 per head. The decoration of this restaurant was amazing and it really had the ‘wow’ factor when you walked in but shame about the rude and shambolic service and very small quantities of food. The starters consisting of various dips, breads and hot meze were tasty, but the service was so unpredictable, we watched half the table receive some starters while we never received any. The worst was yet to come. When the main course finally arrived there was one small plate of various meats to share between four or five people, not much for each of us when you are on a table with four large blokes. We didn't even get new plates and resorted to eating the meat with forks from the sharing plate. Vegetarians were given a very small plate of rice and moussaka to share between two. The bride and groom were mortified and requested more food as everyone was still hungry. For £36 per head I think this is disgraceful. When we refused to pay the optional service charge an argument broke out between the groom and the manager. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, the service is rude and useless and they ruined my friend’s special day.

The food was incredibly expensive and not good value for money. It was terrible, and in the midst of a credit crunch.
