Kettner's Restaurant

29 Romilly Street, Soho, London, W1D 5HP

Kettners is definitely one of a kind as far as the London dining scene is concerned. The venue was first opened by Auguste Kettner, chef to Napoleon III in 1867. Conveniently situated next to the stage doors, it was considered to be a favourite of Edward VII, Lily Langtry and Oscar Wilde amongst many others. At first glance it might seem to be hugely expensive, but then you take in the grand décor with its gilded ceilings and works of art, before noticing that it also has a Champagne bar and whilst yes, it is easy to spend a fortune there, when it comes to the menu the prices are a pleasant surprise. The dishes are inspired by Auguste Kettner's original French style cuisine. A Pudding Bar that serves tea or late night treats and a club-like space called The Apartment are other areas worthy of exploration.

Spaces for hire include original 'cabinets particuliers', plus the Salle de Fete for drinks and canapés for up to 200 guests. Given the sheer size of Kettner's and since bookings are not essential, you can just turn up on the spur of the moment.

REVIEWS OF Kettner's Restaurant

Peter (20 March 2010)

Superb welcome and service, excellent food, steak and Guinness pudding from the table de jour menu is to die for, and the puddings and French tarts are good. Wine is expensive at £6 a glass. Good décor and ambience and it's bustling without being noisy. It's also handy for theatreland. Two course meals for two, including drinks and service comes up to £58. Not bad! It's recommended.

Francine (15 April 2009)

I went to the new Kettner's last Saturday night. I must admit having read all the reviews in the newspaper that I was a bit scared. How wrong I was, we had a fabulous time, the welcome was lovely. The champagne bar was rocking and the food in the restaurant was really good, no complaints from any of our party, just happy noises. I spoke to our lovely waiter at the end of the meal and he was really happy to tell me that they have a new chef, maybe that's what was wrong in the first place. Anyway I am going to be a regular when in town.
