Khublai Khans Mongolian Barbecue

43 Assembly Street, Leith, Edinburgh, EH6 7BQ

It's Asian, exotic and not Chinese, Thai or Indian. Don't think too much because Khublai Khan will simply enthral you with their stunning range of Mongolian cuisine in an informal and upbeat atmosphere which has made them a trendy dining destination, be it in Edinburgh or Glasgow. Wall murals, fabrics and artefacts add to the exciting feel and diners can try out various gastronomic delights just like ancient Mongol warriors who cooked their meals on upturned shields over camp fires. The Mongolian feast is immensely popular where starters could include cumin flavoured minced wild boar in a crispy pastry parcel or fish dumplings in a hot yellow bean sauce. You can then select rice, noodles, vegetables, meats and seafood along with sauces and oils and then head across to the barbeque where the grill chef will cook everything and serve steaming hot.

REVIEWS OF Khublai Khans Mongolian Barbecue

Jan (22 March 2010)

A few friends and I recently visited Khublai Khans in Edinburgh on a personal recommendation. To be honest, we weren't sure what to expect but had a fantastic experience! We were warmly greeted and seated and how the restaurant and more specifically the DIY BBQ worked was thoroughly explained. We ordered our starters. The yak ribs were delicious as were the kangaroo enchiladas! However, the BBQ was the main event. We took a bowl, then helped ourselves, selecting from rice, noodles and all sorts of different fresh vegetables, and then adding a combination of herbs, spices, sauces like coconut milk, Thai curry, sweet and sour and oils. Lastly, we selected our meat - and what a choice! There was everything from chicken and beef to ostrich, crocodile, venison, springbok, kangaroo and zebra. Our creations were then cooked on a huge open hotplate by chefs using vicious looking swords. The great thing was you could re-visit the BBQ as many times as you wanted - my friend managed five bowls! So you could try various meats and taste combinations. Desserts were scrummy - the banoffee pie is to die for. The drinks were also fun. My friend had an authentic Mongolian beer while the rest of us shared a five pint party bowl of cocktail served in a massive brandy glass with the longest straws I've ever seen. All in all, a fantastic experience in a laid-back informal atmosphere. We all said we would return on our next visit to Edinburgh.
