Khushi's Restaurant Description

Khushi's had been in Drummond Street for as long as most people remember, then suddenly you wake up one morning and it has been transformed to its new home in Potterow, though the real diehards will tell you that's where it was when it started in 1947; but then most recently it has moved yet again to brand new larger, 230 seats, premises in Victoria Street. I really don't care, just happy that it is, for if we are honest this is right in the top flight of Indian restaurants in Edinburgh, and the value is incredible.

In the words of one critic there is no curry-by-numbers at Kushi and every dish has the aura of freshly prepared, well-marinated authentic food. Credit cards and reservations are part of the new-look Kushi, though you still have to take your own alcoholic drinks. Should you forget, life will not have ended - there is a wonderful array of the non-alcoholic variety.

The kitchen is now partially on view, if you like that ploy, and there is also a plasma screen showing films in Hindi and Urdu, perhaps of somewhat limited advantage.

Let's concentrate on the food, which is absolutely first-rate and calculated to take your attention far more than films and chefs dreaming of becoming the first Indian celeb of the genre.

A Black (4 January 2009)

I was at Khushi's last month, the first time in their new premises and was gob smacked! It looks amazing. The menu has changed somewhat, but hey it was all good. We had a number of dishes and all dipped in, the best way to eat curries, and I am sorry to say I can only give them a ten out of ten. My taste buds wanted to give them a twenty. I only wish they had opened this one sooner as I have moved away and came back only to see old friends. At least I know where to say when they ask where I want to meet! I love Khushi's and miss it when I can’t get back. The members of staff were also really polite, and I have never experienced any of the rudeness other customers have encountered.

I recently went to Khushi’s after reading the menu put up at the entrance; we saw that they also served authentic Indian pav bhaji and other fast food. When we went in we were told that we would have to vacate the table by 7.15pm i.e. in an hour. Then when we ordered the pav bhaji and they said it’s only served during lunchtime, which was not mentioned in the menu downstairs otherwise we wouldn’t have bothered to come up. So we thought we might just order something as only two among the four of us were really hungry. But to our shock the waiter said that the manager says we have to order at least four main courses. We were shocked, firstly we had to eat within an hour and then they want us to order at least a main course per head. We’ve never heard of such rules, so we had a word with the manager, who was not very helpful, and walked out. On the way out we met another couple who were shocked and stunned by the treatment meted out by the manager.
