King's Head Description
Located just outside Holt close to the road junction on the A148 that leads down to the coast and Blakeney, the King's Head is unashamedly a family place, where free and easy rules. Which is not to say that serious adult food is not available - far from it.
The old Georgian house sits well in a sylvan landscape, close to the former mill, with ample parking and a large garden in which musicians drawn from a wide area of appreciation strum away, mostly at a gathering, sometimes just when the spirit takes them. The result is a relaxed al fresco atmosphere that appeals to those on holiday and locals alike.
A wide range of decent snacks or light meals is always available. For those looking for something a touch more filling select from hot potted prawns with walnuts and toast, homemade liver pate with toast, or mushrooms stuffed with Stilton cheese and deep-fried.
Main courses of lamb cutlets, locally made sausages and egg, an 8oz fillet steak all hit the spot, and the renowned King's Head mixed grill makes a worthy antidote for somebody who has spent an exhausting day on the sandy beaches and mudflats of North Norfolk. For special treats try the King's Head cauliflower cheese with bubble and squeak
Puddings are uncomplicated, homemade apple pie, Norfolk ice cream, and sturdy helpings of cheddar or Stilton cheese.
There is always an interesting array of local beers, a wine list that matches up well with the cuisine, and service is cheerful, though sometimes a little stressed when the place fills up.

We had a very disappointing meal. They offered to adapt a menu to cater for vegans in our party - so we were full of hope. The vegan meal, which was an adaptation of mushroom stroganoff, turned out to be deep fried mushrooms on top of a plate of plain boiled white rice. We also had a frizzled mixed grill, and a spicy vegetable stir fry - potato and frozen vegetables encased in chilli powder. We may have been unlucky but I don't think so. The landlord was very hospitable and that was the only reason we didn't complain - although we really should have.

We chose the King’s Head for a family meal with our two children. The pub was definitely child friendly but we all found the food appalling - bland, dry and luke warm (if lucky). The worst pub we have experienced. Otherwise our trip to Norflok was superb and would recommend Mary Jane's fish shop in Cromer - delicious.
