Not far from the Barbican station between Smithfield Market and the Barbican is Kipferl, which is most likely to be the only Austrian cafe in London. The atmosphere is cosy and warm, perfect for those days when you want to linger over a flaky pastry or some fragrant coffee.

Hearty and rustic dishes are plentiful in the menu, starting with the breakfast options of croissants, Danish pastry or custard tart. For lunch, hot sausages served with sauerkraut, pickles, mustard and rye bread are a popular choice, although the platters with a mixed selection of cold meats and cheeses are favourites too. Rolls filled with Tyrolean ham and herb quark or pate and gherkin are interesting while the range of open sandwiches seem to have a great fan following.

Those with a sweet tooth will be totally unable to resist the sachertorte, apfelstrudel or Viennese tarts while the organic mountain cheeses have their own special appeal. The Kipferl drinks list offers teas, coffees and some excellent Austrian wines.
