Kiraku is the latest in a line of attractively simple restaurants that have proved to be popular over the last few years by providing traditional and honest Japanese food. To judge by the number of Japanese clientele at the restaurant, and the native style of welcome on arrival they will not fail the authenticity test.

Alongside sushi and sashimi, the generously filled soft shell crab roll has swiftly become a house favourite. The menu also covers Japanese classics such as katsudon, a bowl of rice topped with deep-fried pork cutlets, egg and condiments and tori nanba soba, noodles made from buckwheat flour topped with chicken and chopped green onion. Those seeking a stronger alternative to Sake could try Shochu, a Japanese tipple usually drunk on the rocks or with hot water.

The Japanese owe their longevity to their diet, and thanks to Kiraku, we may probably live a little longer - or is just the Shochu?
