Knife and Cleaver, The Description

knife and cleaver bedfordshireNo longer really a pub, more a good-class restaurant, which offers a good all-round menu. The place is full of dark oak and atmosphere, some of it culled from surrounding properties over the centuries, while the main restaurant is in a light and airy Victorian style conservatory. There is an emphasis on fish fresh from the marketplace but other delights are in abundance as well, such as Welsh Lamb and Black Beef.

A typical menu could offer smoked salmon, crabmeat and avocado cocktail, dill flavoured Sardinian flatbread; chargrilled English asparagus, bresaola, parmesan cheese shavings; warm duck confit, potato and broad bean salad, orange mayonnaise; or pan-seared king scallops, Italian-style roasted sweet pepper stuffed with Mediterranean vegetables, parmesan topping.

Main courses might include chilled seafood platter, rock lobster tail, Mediterranean prawns, oysters, green lipped mussels, marinated herring, brown shrimps, garlic mayonnaise, salad leaves: corn fed chicken breast stuffed with spicy chorizo sausage, saffron, sweet pepper and olive risotto, fino sherry jus; trio of organic salmon fillets, (marinated in sweet chilli and lemon grass, cured in orange and juniper, chargrilled) with crushed new potatoes, watercress sauce; or pan fried prime beef fillet, blue cheese and mushroom ragout, onion rings, rich merlot gravy

Finishing with a selection of their fabulous homemade desserts.

They also have nine bedrooms in the flowery cottage garden which are all double or twin size en-suite. They have central heating, tea and coffee making facilities, with fresh milk and homemade biscuits, satellite TV, radio, direct dial telephone with modem connection, hairdryer and refrigerator.

All bathrooms have baths with power shower attachments. The three de-luxe rooms in the converted stable block are more spacious with a trouser press and individual decor and furnishings.

More information, including details on weddings and functions, is available on their very comprehensive Website. They were awarded 'Dining Pub of the Year for Bedfordshire' in the 2005 Good Pub Guide, quite an accolade.

Your Reviews of Knife and Cleaver, The

Jonathan (13 April 2008)

I ate there for the first time last night – the service was friendly and relaxed but the vegetarian main course of mushroom gratin was overcooked and disappointing.

Michelle and Ian (12 September 2007)

I had been there, the bar and restaurant wasn’t that busy as it was a Tuesday. We were greeted by a very friendly bar man (the owner). After we had ordered our drinks, we asked for the food menu. There were a lot to choose from, but we went for the bar menu. My partner had the haddock soup and chicken, bacon and apple pie, I had the soup of the day and salmon in a crepe. I thought going to Fat Duck in Bray was an experience of different flavours but the knife and clever was a far better experience and not that expensive. We will without a doubt be going back for another tasty dish.
