La Bouchee

56 Old Brompton Road, London, SW7 3DY

A delightful piece of France on Old Brompton Road, La Bouchee evokes an era when salmon was a fish, not just a colour. The relaxed atmosphere has won a large following of local diners, who seem to positively admire the rustic clutter of weathered wood, antiques, candles and other bric-a-brac. Good food seems to be the winner here matched by a wine list that is packed with surprises. Some things never go out of style on French menus, like snails with garlic and parsley butter and terrine of foie gras, but that doesn't mean there is no room for innovation; think smoked salmon, trout and mackerel set in shellfish jus with leeks and toasted brioche. The subsequent course is a delight as well with homemade chicken white pudding with roasted pistachios and Madeira sauce and roasted red leg partridge, sauerkraut, wild mushrooms, smoked Alsace bacon and brandy jus.

REVIEWS OF La Bouchee

Dianne (25 April 2010)

We have just had a family lunch at La Bouchee and it was excellent! The staff managed to deal with all nine of us in a relaxed and friendly manner, remaining highly professional all the time. The food was very tasty with interesting choices, from ox cheeks in broth to a naughty but lovely chocolate fondant. The wine list was quite comprehensive and our choice of an unpretentious Cotes de Rhone and a light Italian wine were perfect to accompany our dishes. The staff were great - we won't hear a word against them! It was a really fun place for our gathering and we will certainly be returning.

Shirley (6 July 2009)

Having read all the negative reviews, I wanted to see how bad a place could be - love a challenge! I have to say that from booking my table, to being genuinely welcomed by friendly staff, I found the service really efficient and charming. The staff were knowledgeable and sweet. We ordered the grilled goat's cheese and the pork terrine to start and then the famous coq au vin and a delicious salmon dish with cockles, chorizo and broad beans we shared a gratin dauphinois - yum. They had a special chocolate fondant which was served with fabulous strawberry ice cream. We drank a good Viognier white wine. Only criticism is the loos - bit of a let down. Give them a go! It's still as rickety as the old reports say but they seem to have got it together.
