La Chouette
Westlington Green, Dinton, nr Aylesbury, HP17 8UW
Quite a character restaurant here. Frederic Desmette is the chef, waiter, barman - Oh! Yes - and the owner. He combines all these roles with an élan that is both admirable and wise. Since wisdom is an attribute normally associated with owls it is hardly surprising that the place is called La Chouette. The décor is friendly and relaxing and pink predominates. The kitchen calls for the best of fresh ingredients, including fish and game, with desserts being something of a lucky (but seldom disappointing) dip. Lunch of three courses is an absolute snip at £11. In the absence of too much in the way of Belgian availability, France predominates on the wine list, including two house wines at £11.Quite a character restaurant here. REVIEWS OF La Chouette
Joe Avazian (13 January 2011)
My fiancé and I went to La Chouette on Tuesday in December 2010. We were met by the chef who was pleasant and chatty - he explained that we would have the place to ourselves. La Chouette is a small cosy place with lovely pictures on the wall. On to the food, I had fillet of sea bass for starter, which I can assure you was a pleasure to eat, my fiancé had smoked salmon, which she also enjoyed. The chef would come and collect our plates and we would not wait long for our main. I had bambi and Jade had steak - we were in heaven. Jade likes her steak medium -well, she was shocked to find that her steak was done rare and even more shocked that she enjoyed it so much - believe it or not, she now eats rare steak. The dessert was superb, Jade had pancakes which were amazing! I had nougatine in a raspberry coulis, which was amazing. People should definitely give this place a try. It is expensive but some how you don’t grudge paying it because the food is amazing. Well worth a trip and a chef who has a funny European conservative humour. Oh yeah, and he is thinking about doing a military discount joke!
Opinionated Customer (26 August 2010)
Having visited this restaurant a number of times I’ve lost count now, I feel it’s only fair I write a review. This little place is set back away from the hustle and bustle of town and city life, and a very remote quiet location for you to get away from it all. The 'old fashioned' decor is very enchanting and welcoming allowing you to relax as soon as you walk through the door. Frederic Desmette is very unique and hilarious, you either get his humour or you don’t, my husband and I actually enjoy the banter and give as good as we get, in fact we actually think we have tamed him now! The food is great; try his seabass and the wonderful lemon sauce that goes with it. I would recommend the lamb, always cooked just how I like it, and always ask for a surprise dessert, you never know what you might get. The wine list is very extensive, hard to choose from, and the selection of Belgian beers on offer is like no other for miles around, even with all this choice Frederic often pours me a perfect Gin and Tonic. As mentioned earlier we often return to this 'Quirky' little restaurant and have no hesitations in recommending it to any one reading this review.
