Lambs Description

Lambs is a popular restaurant in the centre of town, a favourite with theatre-orientated folk and lunchtime crowds alike, they offer quality and good value. 12 Sheep Street is one of the oldest buildings in Stratford; it dates from the early sixteenth century, probably during the reign of Henry VIII. In 1933, the house reverted briefly to private occupancy, since then, however, it has been in continuous use as a cake shop, tearoom and now a restaurant.

The kitchen breathes creativity into the menu, opening with starters like crispy pork with mango and watercress salad, and Wiltshire honey roasted ham with breaded free-range hen's egg. The sharpness of bitter orange and lime in sauce bigarade brings an appealing spin to a main course of Gressingham duck breast, while pan-fried calves' liver is accompanied by creamed potato, wilted spinach, crispy pancetta and red wine jus.

Alice's Room at Lambs can accommodate 12-16 guests and is well suited for private dining.

Pauline (2 September 2006)

My husband and I visited this restaurant just in passing and felt very lucky to have got a table without prior booking. The menu was extremely extensive along with the wine list. We both skipped starters and opted for a main course of fillet steak which was the best either of us had ever tasted. For dessert we went for the chocolate and white chocolate ice-cream which was the best!! A bottle of the house wine was delicious too. Would certainly visit again when in the area. A word of warning though - if you definitely want to dine here, advance booking would be highly recommended as many people just turning up on the off chance of getting a table were unable to be accommodated due to the popularity of this place.

Louise Carter (3 April 2006)

I visited this restaurant Sat 1st April. On arrival my husband and I were shown to a table on the 1st floor - the restaurant was packed so it was a good job we booked in advance. Very nicely decorated with comfy leather chairs, and a considerate touch was the leather padding to the low ceiling beams - my husband is 6'1" so always bangs his head in these types of places!

Anyway on to the food - after placing our order we were presented with bread and tapenade to get us ready for the feast ahead. The menu is varied with someone to suit most palates, plus a specials menu. My husband had the roasted scallops with crab risotto to start - he was not too keen on the crab risotto, not enough crab and slightly overcooked for his liking. I chose the moules mariniere - perfectly cooked, juicy mussels in a lovely 'soup' with not too much cream - exactly how I like it.

For the main course my husband, sticking with the fish dishes, chose the linguine with king prawn, red mullet, mussels etc.. which he thoroughly enjoyed. I opted for the roast duck with croquette potatoes, savoy cabbage and a cassis sauce. The duck was served pink with lovely crispy skin, and the cabbage was quite peppery which complemented the dish.

To round off the meal I decided to try the lemon tart - delicious. My husband had the cheese platter which included the finest brie he has ever tasted! Washed down with 2 glasses of port. A wonderful evening all in all, we will definitely return.
