Landgate Bistro
5-6 Landgate, Rye, TN31 7LH
The Landgate Bistro has gathered unto itself a basketful of awards and commendations that must be very tempting at times, but there is no sign of any break in the momentum of this friendly little place. Try starting with the delicious salmon and salt cod fishcakes served with a delicate parsley sauce. Because I'm a fan I would find it very difficult to resist the lamb's sweetbreads, with ginger and coriander, but for gentler souls the griddled cutlets of Gloucester Old Spot with a sage and apple sauce could make a pleasing alternative. Anybody who takes the trouble to serve pink fir potatoes goes up in my estimation, and they do here. The Jamaican chocolate cream should meet all needs. There is a commendably wide-ranging wine list with most under £20 and quality house French at £8.The Landgate Bistro has gathered unto itself a basketful of awards and commendations that must be very tempting at times, but there is no sign of any break in the momentum of this friendly little place. REVIEWS OF Landgate Bistro
Daniel (26 February 2009)
This was the restaurant we chose when we went to Rye and I couldn't have been more pleased. Simple excellent ingredients cooked very well - the Romney lamb was awesome and the rabbit terrine superb.
Steve Camburn (15 February 2009)
My wife and I had our first meal at the Landgate this week. The food was wonderful and beautifully cooked. My venison was to die for and my wife's duck was delicious. However, we were given small pub glasses for our red wine and the waitress could not tell me how a rabbit dish was cooked - had no idea in fact! The waitresses were not very attentive and all were wearing different casual clothes. Black aprons and white shirts would have lifted the experience. The décor was also tired with chairs and tables looking low-priced and dated. Minor complaints as the food was fantastic but we will not go there again in a hurry when there are other places nearby who have got it right.
