Langar Hall Description

langar hall nottinghamshire chocolateIf you are ever looking for somewhere special to stay or dine, then this charming country house hotel near Nottingham is ideal. Langar Hall offers a haven of tranquillity away from the stress of city life.

Langar is a true country house which has evolved into an hotel and restaurant without losing the air of a family home, children are always welcome. This is made possible by Imogen Skirving whose family has owned Langar since 1868. Langar enjoys a reputation for exceptional hospitality, friendly and efficient service, comfortable bedrooms, each one with a unique style, good food and a sympathetic wine list.

The food reflects the house and its situation: Classical English with a twist. Unpretentious, strictly seasonal, with the emphasis on local quality ingredients including Langar lamb and Stilton fed pork, garden herbs and vegetables. The Stiltons are from surrounding villages and the game from the Duke of Rutland's estate at nearby Belvoir castle. Fish and shellfish arrive overnight from Brixham and Scotland.

A typical dinner menu might offer starters such as spicy marrow and apricot soup; local shot game terrine, brioche and chutney; hand dived scallops, creamed chicory or half a grilled lobster with butter and lemon.

And as if those were not tempting enough, the main courses are a real 'tour de force' and could include such dishes as roast darne of turbot, Hollandaise sauce; roast Belvoir partridge, foie gras and bacon; Langar lamb done 'three ways' or roast saddle of venison, peppery port sauce and there are always a choice of vetarian options in both courses.

However, leave some room as when you come to their desserts, which could truly be described as a dieter's worst nightmare, as who could possibly resist caramelised orange pancakes; hot chocolate fondant, white chocolate ice cream; hot passion fruit soufflé or chestnut parfait with coffee sauce. The interesting wine list offers an excellent choice of quality wines from around the world, all sensibly priced. The restaurant is open every day including Sunday evenings.

There are private rooms for 8 - 20 guests, a children's play area and walks for dogs on leads. From May 2005, the conservatory will serve seafood and light dishes from 10.00 am to last orders at 6.00 pm. This all adds to the feeling that you have enjoyed a little more than a meal. Langar Hall is an ideal venue for a small family house party to celebrate a special occasion from weddings to birthdays.

If you still need to be convinced that Langar Hall is the right place for you, then a visit to their Website would be recommended.

I think some people just don't get this place!! You go here to eat nice food, relax in lovely surroundings and they do truly make you feel at home. I have always found the service to be excellent and suspect that some people who don't, have perhaps been less than polite to the staff!!

Check out Michael, my very favourite waiter with a subtle sense of humour - my elderly Stepmother adored him!! I have always found the portions to be perfect and in many cases generous. A friend who is getting married soon liked it so much she considered it for her wedding!! It is a chilled out sort of place, so if you want pretentious and stuffy, you may be better elsewhere!!

Paul Cowley-Vizard (30 January 2005)

I dined at Langar Hall last night for the first time, having tried to get a booking on several previous occasions, without success.

I had to confess to being slightly sceptical, because I had visited the Hall on a previous occasion to see whether I should hold an important event there. On that occasion, the owner showed us around, and when we arrived at the main hall, where a couple were having their wedding reception, she showed us in, and allowed us to stand watching. I am not sure how the happy couple felt about it, but I was unimpressed, so we didn’t book the place.

Anyway, back to last night. We arrived in a happy fug, induced by a couple of glasses of Champagne en-route, to be greeted at the door by the owner. We were shown into the drawing room where we had more champagne and some nibbles. The atmosphere was informal and very cosy.

We chose champagne to start, because the waiter did not know what was in a “Champagne Cocktail”. Rather than explain, we went for the bog standard champagne, which was so-so. The second waiter on the scene, who reminded me of George Benson, was far more clued up and in his role as sommelier/waiter served us well.

Once at our table, our lobster starter arrived quickly, accompanied by an assortment of delicious home-baked breads. The Lobster was very good – if small for the asking price – and maybe a bit too buttery for some tastes, which is surprising because.

The food could probably have been described as “Nouvelle Cuisine”, with only light sauces and tiny, tiny portions. My wife had the Sea Bass, which came with two fronds of spinach. I had the lamb, which was served as an assiette with (and I kid you not) a single small floret of broccoli cut in two. That was it, no more to come. I ordered some additional vegetables, which arrived sniffily about ten minutes later.

Though I ate slowly in anticipation of the veg' arriving, my lamb did not start out that warm, and by the end I was eating tepid and quite bloody meat
