Langton, The Description
The Langton is an attractive addition to the good life in Cheltenham, conveniently close to the Racecourse and nestling in the heart of Charlton Kings. The charming, listed Regency house has been skilfully refurbished, guided by English Heritage, to produce a unique blend of organic, new and old features. This proves that the old and the new can be combined using patience and flair.
The Inn is truly a place for all seasons, and the menu reflects this as it embraces not only the seasons, but also the atmosphere within, ranging from cool chic in summer to the cosy warmth of a winter's day with the hatches well battened down. It is a wonderful surprise to find a pub that has firmly grasped the gastro nettle in and around the Midlands, with pretty sensational results that include demonstrably freshly cooked food and a high zing factor.
To set the right note of fashionable sociability there are sharing plates, baked Camembert with rustic bread, Greek mezze of taramasalata with humus, tzatziki, feta and flatbread, or a pizzette with garlic, rocket and Parmesan.
Amongst the starters, there is baked French onion soup with gruyere cheese, smoked haddock with bubble and squeak, seared pigeon with roasted beetroot or red onion and apple tarte tatin with rocket. The salads - sorry, that should read 'leaves' - offer chicken Caesar with marinated anchovies and parmesan, for the seafood fiends some seared prawns, chorizo and baby spinach or Dolcelatte, honey roast pears, chicory and walnut salad
These days no self-respecting gastropub can afford to be without its pizza range; expect to find a classic Margherita of tomato, mozzarella and basil, another with pepperoni, chorizo and jalapeno. Pastas include spaghetti with salmon, peas, spinach and cream or chef's choice risotto.
For the big event, there is always a fish of the day on request. The line caught swordfish with warm salad of pak choi, shitake mushrooms and mango is worth trying too. The lamb burger, which has risen from the confines of fast food chains, carves a niche for itself on the menu and comes with minted Greek yoghurt and frites. For hearty eaters there are good fillet steaks with flat mushroom, pate and mash.
A wide range of supporting dishes includes Belgian frites, creamed potatoes and sautéed green beans. For desserts, resort to the blackboard, where there is always a good display, often with some of the local cheeses to set the buffs alight.
A well-travelled wine list and service that is cheerful and efficient completes the recipe for success. The Langton also has ten different beers on tap, ranging from standard lagers to European speciality beers, such as Leffe and Erdinger, as well as great cask ales like the award winning and ever-popular Timothy Taylor Landlord.
They also benefit from outside seating with 50 seats on the terrace and a lawn at the rear; but, to keep up to date with what is going on at The Langton, including the latest menu, take a tour round their Website. Please note that the E-Mail Contact is for enquiries only, not for bookings.
Your Reviews of Langton, The
Gavin Atkinson (14 December 2007)
We regularly dine at the Langton and absolutely love the place. The service is friendly, the food just wonderful and a great atmosphere. We are the owners of Hilden Lodge, which is a Guest House just a few hundred yards up the A40 from the Langton. We send about ten to twenty people a week to the Langton and everyone comes back with praise. Well done and we look forward to our Christmas dinner on Christmas day at the Langton.
Mr Davidson (8 July 2007)
We visited the Langton for the first time in a long while today. Initially we were frequent visitors in the carvery days then paid a visit just following its refurbishment. Post refurb we felt it was rather ostentatious and trying a little too hard.
However, the ambiance today was spot on and we very much enjoyed it. They have some nicely situated tables although one or two require some juggling to get into as they are jammed in amongst the other furniture.
So once we had situated ourselves at a table that we could get our legs under and that was not directly under one of the speakers issuing a rather too loud a report of the music on offer we settled in.
The service was a little abrasive at first, not rude just not in keeping with the image portrayed by the ambiance and flavour of the new setting.
Things warmed quickly as our table hostess introduced herself. Her manner, politeness and prompt and attentive service was very welcome and expertly performed with not the slightest air of syrupy niceness.
The menu was broad and pleased me with a wide range of imaginative, though not disconcerting, seafood selections. The grill, bakes and salad menu were refreshing and interesting. I would have liked to have seen some more of the dishes offered with the same beautiful honey roast vegetables that were offered as a side order. The duck with mashed potato was a little disappointing to my partner, who felt the dish a little lacking, and felt that it would have been more enjoyable with other than the mashed potato accompaniment. The duck though was prepared to perfection. A perfectly done piece with not the slightest fat or trace of grease and yet lightly crisped. Beautiful.
The prices were I felt reasonable, some dishes obviously warranted the elevated price like the fillet steak (£17) of which I partook, which simply melted in the mouth. Other dishes however I felt had their prices elevated to be "in keeping" such as a simple burger at £10.
All in all I was pleased with the dining experience and left feeling satisfied. However I felt that the quality of the food enabled me to discount some rather irritating niggles. If these were addressed than the dining experience would have gone from most enjoyable to simply divine. The food, ambiance, decor are all fabulous. The music volume, offish bar waitress, few jammed in tables somewhat detracted from the pleasure.
These however are simply rectified issues and are well worth putting up with to sample the fabulous, fabulous food.
