Larder on Goosegate, The Description
I've done a few things in Boots shops in my time, but never before have I sat down to a supremely comfortable meal in one, let alone the original, going back to 1850. Now totally unrecognisable from its former existence it makes an ideal setting for a rest between shopping, for a spot of supper before you head homewards after the labours of the day are over, or as just a good neighbourhood restaurant, something one is glad to see on the increase.
There is considerable similarity between the a la carte and lunchtime menus, though some variation in portions I would think. Local produce is very much on their minds, and amongst the starters expect to find mixed Skylark Hill Farm goat's cheese crostini, or a salad of skate, fine beans and potato with parsley caper dressing.
Mains come up with a 28 day hung 10ox sirloin steak with hand cut chips, Brixham Harbour fish of the day, or Vale of Belvoir lamb shank with summer vegetables. Puddings weigh in with gooseberry and elderflower mess, summer pudding or a well presented crème brulée. Being where it is there is an ample supply of well kept Colston Basset Stilton to say nothing of some sharp Lincolnshire Poacher.
Any restaurant that publicly honours its suppliers gets my vote - after all they are unsung heroes without whom we would be dependent upon potentially dodgy sources, never mind the quiet satisfaction that comes from eating something locally reared or grown. It is quite a while since I have seen such an impressive list of local suppliers, including the wines supplied by Weavers of Nottingham, and beer from two Midlands brewers.

Your Reviews of Larder on Goosegate, The
D Todd (10 June 2008)
What a shame! A generally good meal thoroughly let down by lousy service. The tasty, frill-free food was ruined by surly, unfriendly service. What was even more disappointing was that when I emailed to raise my concerns with the proprietors I received no response. Despite the good food I wouldn’t say it was a pleasant dining experience.

I've been to The Larder on Goosegate several times and have always enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and food which is not too expensive. This is one of my favourite places to eat.
