Le Poussin at Parkhill Description

In 1999 Le Poussin was extricated from its rather obscure premises nearby and re-housed in the elegant New Forest country house hotel. Everybody seems to have benefited from the change, not least Alex Aitken who now has the space and inspiration to produce greater delights than even hitherto. The surrounding forest is still scoured for wild herbs and mushrooms and the game dishes remain superb. The wine list reflects the French origins as does the quality of the service. House wine at £12.50.

Fixed Lunch

  • £15 (2 courses) to £20 (3 courses)

Mr Disappointed (11 January 2006)

The Food was good but service not great. I stayed at this establishment over the New Year. A New Year Package costing £700 for 2 nights for 2 persons including breakfast and; A Cocktail Reception, a gastronomic Meal with chosen wines to compliment each course [5] and of course a glass of champagne to toast in the New Year, this on New Years Eve, and dinner from the daily dinner menu on the second or first day of the 2 nights. Also included were Tea with Home made cakes and biscuits.

Sadly, there was no tea with Biscuits and home made cakes, no pre New Years Eve gastronomic meal Cocktail reception, and due to lack of planning no Glass of champagne at Midnight to toast the New Year.

Furthermore at checkout the wines chosen to go with the gastro meal where not included in the already paid for package, neither were the cooked breakfast, despite the package stating breakfasts apparently this was not for a cooked breakfast only a continental breakfast. No beverages were in our room and coffee ordered was of course at a charge of £3.50.

It was sad that even the so called gastronomic meal although good did not include coffee, this again extra as was the wines despite being told on booking that the wines were part of the package price for the Gastronomic meal, i.e. the chosen wines a glass with each course [5].

On booking, there was no mention of the fact that this establishment only has toilets for customers on the first floor up a flight of stairs so not great for everyone. No mention of no beverages in the rooms and not really room service for a coffee. A bottle of Hildon water was in our room but even this was not replaced on our second night. Overall, it was a very expensive package over £200 additional charges. The food good but I have stayed at better establishments with better service and better food for less. The waiting staff predominantly Polish and their English was not up to speed so request for condiments and such were err ignored. At Midnight on N

Outstanding food from start to finish and top marks for presenting the daily dinner menu in both carnivore and veggie options. Table service was formal and synchronised(!), but the staff are very friendly with no hint of stuffiness. The Purple and Green conservatory dining room was a bit garish so instead we concentrated on the gorgeous New Forest vistas... Heavenly.
