Le Poussin at Whitley Ridge Description

Like so many of its kind in that area, the restaurant at Whitley Ridge Hotel is surrounded by the magic of the New Forest; Whitley Ridge is a two hundred year old Georgian house, the bay windows look out onto woodland and forest ponies. Built in the late 18th century it has served as a royal hunting lodge, but now offers comfortable quarters and an inspiring menu in the candlelit dining room, which has been awarded two AA rosettes for culinary excellence.

How inspired would you need to be to start with rosette of Denhay ham filled with fresh figs steeped in port wine syrup and topped with seasonal leaves? Despite taking active measures to avoid eating chicken I would stretch a point here and go for the pan-fried supreme of chicken marinated in dark oriental sauces, on a bed of roasted peppers, ginger and spring onion served with a honey cream. A well-travelled wine list with house wine at £11.

Your Reviews of Le Poussin at Whitley Ridge

Gill Sworn (10 June 2008)

I have eaten at Le Poussin at Whitley Ridge for about ten times in the last two years during lunchtime. I can only say that Le Poussin knocks spots off any round here. The food is amazing and beautifully presented with the waiting staff who always explain exactly what is on your plate. £20.00 for a three course lunch, including a glass of wine, is excellent value and the quality is first class. It’s my favourite place but the only downside is they do not change the menu often but because I have my favourites it does not matter too much.

Dina (7 September 2007)

That is a one star Michelin restaurant but not on the day I had visited. We lunched at le Poussin at Whitley Ridge. Eating in the outside area was very nice. The service was attentive but intrusive. We were asked three times if we were enjoying the main course, not by the head waiter. One of the waitresses was incomprehensible.

The starters were fine. The house was disappointingly below average. For main meal, I had venison. It was chewy to the point of inedible. And upon complaining, the head waiter’s response was that he had it for lunch and it was fine and that we should expect the meat to be tough in places. Really? I found that was unprofessional and rude. Although we had laguiole knives they were not sharp enough to cut the meat without shaking the table. I wonder if the head waiter used those knives for his meal.
