Le Sept Restaurant Description
The charming little Le Sept can be found immediately off the Old Town High Street by the Tron Kirk and is one of those Edinburgh institutions you should not miss visiting. The restaurant is known to serve some of the best French country dishes and chances are that going there will make you fall in love with France and its cooking.
The special seafood menu with choices such as whole king prawns with garlic butter offer a whole new dimension to that simple dish. Steaks can be cooked to order with one of a variety of interesting accompaniments, not least the cracked black pepper and brandy gravy or you may prefer the roast haunch of venison, marinated in red wine and served with dauphinoise potatoes.
Their crepes are legendary and include imaginative fillings, come with their own béchamel sauce and are topped with Jarlsberg cheese. Le Sept's own special house wine offers good value both by the glass and bottle. The wine list itself is full of mainly French wines, carefully chosen and well-priced.

The service was attentive when we booked a table for four, for my spouse's birthday in January. Excellent service, delicious food and welcoming atmosphere – this was our fourth visit to this restaurant and it certainly will not be the last.

Having had pleasant meals at Le Sept in the past, I tried to take my parents there last night for an early dinner. We left before ordering thanks to the attitude of the staff. In an empty restaurant with four other diners, we were placed in a corner by the heating controls and a draughty open door, with a busker from the street so loud we could barely hear ourselves. When I asked if we could move we were told the only table available was downstairs. I then asked if the door could be closed rather than sit in an empty basement, only to be snapped at that it would get far too hot if they did that. Not a word of apology at being unable to provide a pleasant place to eat - instead the staff were exasperated that we'd asked them for anything. A meal out is as much about the surroundings and service as the food - one to avoid for the former, clearly.
