Lemon Sole Restaurant Description
Sunil Sood owns both Lemon Sole and Crofts Wine Cellar and Bistro in Portsmouth. He has many years of experience in the hospitality industry and this translates into great food and excellent service at his restaurants - little wonder then that it merits an inclusion in the 2007 Michelin Guide.
Croft's Cellar, which is downstairs by an ancient well, has original stone flooring, and its serene candle lit atmosphere makes it the perfect place to have a quiet drink. Quite a contrast, Lemon Sole, upstairs, done up in shades of light yellow, offers diners a bright and tastefully lit restaurant and is an ideal venue for intimate dinners or large get togethers.
There are classics such as beef tomato filled with lobster, crabmeat and prawns; caramelised king scallops and shell-on Atlantic prawns as well as the chef's recommendations of whole grilled lobster thermidor and monkfish wrapped in bacon, among others.
An exotic dish for two, aptly called Lemon Sole's fish love affair, is a trio of fish accompanied by mussels, gambas and home breaded squid, finished in a cream based herb sauce, served with French bread and a mixed salad.
A unique feature of the restaurant, however, is the live fish counter, which provides an opportunity for diners to select their fish, which is then cooked in a sauce of their choice. Some options for these are red pepper, basil and chilli, white butter, lemon and thyme, Hollandaise or mushroom and fennel. All of these are served with potatoes on the side.
For many diners the unusual experience of choosing their own fish, and having it prepared exactly as they like, is as pleasurable as enjoying their meal and this keeps them going back to Lemon Sole.

They serve lunch from 12:00 till 14:30 hours with last orders at 14:00 hours but today being a Thursday we couldn't get a meal when we arrived at 13:45 hours. I suppose the chef wanted an early day off. Not a good impression after driving 35 miles for a lunch.

My husband took me to Lemon Sole Restaurant last night for my birthday. I had the seafood chowder and was expecting a hearty creamy soup with seafood, bacon, sweet corn and potato. The soup was watery and tomato based with three mussels, in their shell, a cockle and half a dozen rings of squid and a few uncooked pepper slices. My husband had a large mushroom stuffed with crab meat, which he said was good. I had Cajun tuna niçoise for my main course - I asked for the tuna rare. The tuna was cooked beautifully but didn't taste fresh, the Cajun spice didn't taste homemade and I think was sprinkled on after cooking. The niçoise salad was broccoli, peppers and olives but is usually made with new potatoes, olives, French beans, anchovies, hard boiled egg and tomatoes. My husband had a mixed seafood grill, which he said was swimming in butter and was all right. He also had new potatoes, which I ate - they were delicious. The service was very good and attentive without being intrusive and as it was a Monday night – it was quiet. When they checked if we were happy with our food, I complained about my tuna. They apologised and offered to cook me another one but by then I'd eaten my husband's potatoes and didn't want another Cajun tuna niçoise, which wasn't a niçoise salad at all. They didn't charge for the tuna. I think the prices are about right but only for a much higher standard of cooking.
