Lemonia

89 Regent's Park Road, Chalk Farm, London, NW1 8UY

A permanently busy Greek Cypriot taverna, which has been popular for many years now, Lemonia serves traditional dishes such as juicy olives, delicious grilled halloumi, interesting salads, grilled sardines, dolmades and warm pitta bread and that's just for starters. For mains expect the usual kebabs but also seared tuna and keftedakia, a classic dish of deep-fried minced chicken. Lunch, especially during the week, can be a lot cheaper, as they offer excellent set menus at very low prices. House wine is French, at £12 a litre, but most others are very drinkable Greek Cypriot ones. Very family orientated, a lot of the staff almost deserve long service awards, and know many of the regular customers, and their children; it can be quite noisy at times! Matthew Norman in The Sunday Telegraph Magazine in Sept 2003 loved Lemonia - a regular haunt of his mother's - but recommended that you go there without her! He described it as serving, "Fine, unpretentious Greek-Cypriot cooking with a few more recherché dishes added to the usual suspects, relying on the oddly elusive formula of good basic ingredients well and simply cooked.
