Les Mirabelles

We went there for Mother's Day but will not be going back. Meat tarte was like dry pastry. The vegetables were two types of mashed potatoes. My wife was served goose that tasted like Duck. Even the waitress who served it thought it was Duck. My mother complained to the Maitre about the pastry and was told she should have complained earlier. He did not acknowledge the complaint. I think their food is overpriced and without substance. I must add that their setting is lovely.

My wife and I went there for lunch. Two courses for £16.50 and three for £19.50 are available Tuesday through Friday. We started with rare sirloin steak in a mustard sauce, which was accompanied by wild mushrooms, young pea pods and rice. It was a generous portion of steak and the sauce was delicious. For dessert we both chose crème brulee. This was excellent. It was served in a flat dish, so there was a good area of topping. Both the crunchy top and the cream dessert underneath were exactly right. So, we were very happy with the food - both the quality and the value. The glasses of house wine were quite okay, but overpriced at £10.20 for two small glasses. The coffee was nothing special and, again, overpriced at £2.50 for a small cup. The service was pleasant and unobtrusive. The wine list, should you venture in that direction, is unbelievably long, topped by some rare wines priced up to £200 a bottle. Overall, we were well pleased with our excursion into the New Forest and are happy to recommend this restaurant.
