L'Etranger Restaurant

36 Gloucester Road, London, SW7 4QT

Imagine a menu that has French food as a basis, with an underlying Japanese influence and you have the enigma that is L'Etranger. Dishes include foie gras terrine with pickled berries, confit of Barbary duck, or pan-seared Scottish scallops, all decidedly French, but followed by Grade 9 Wagyu fillet with black truffle and rock shrimp and silken tofu tempura, chilli mayonnaise and ponzu, so very Asian. This cool venue in South Kensington seems to have gone down well with its clientele, starting with the handsome dining room done up in grey and subtle lilac with oak flooring, to the warm and convivial atmosphere within. L'Etranger has an amazing wine list with over 1000 entries, and was fittingly awarded two goblets from the Wine Spectator magazine from 2006-2008.

REVIEWS OF L'Etranger Restaurant

Nigel Headley (1 February 2009)

The place was full despite the variously high prices; a good sign in the depths of a recession. Friendly, helpful staff and a nice setting, the food is to die for with possibly the finest steak I've ever eaten. The house wine at £20 was most drinkable and we had a great night out. Our waiter even got us special entry to the nightclub in the basement after we had finished our meal.
