Lian Restaurant
5 Newland Street, Witham, CM8 2AF
Located in a very traditional brick-built Essex gentleman's house this Chinese restaurant has achieved a reputation for excellence and high standards. They specialise in Pekingese and Szechwan cuisine, served in surroundings that are impeccably Oriental. One of their specialities is hand-carved vegetables, which strikes me as the ultimate sacrifice or extreme dedication. But very beautiful they are and you soon summon up the necessary sang froid to devour them. They also do excellent mornings when you can learn how to cook the proper way, followed by lunch, which is excellent value at £25. In the gastronomic desert which is Essex, with the customary notable exceptions, it is heartening to be able to number an ethnic cuisine amongst them.Located in a very traditional brick-built Essex gentleman's house this Chinese restaurant has achieved a reputation for excellence and high standards. REVIEWS OF Lian Restaurant
Patsy and Dennis (14 February 2010)
Last evening Lian’s restaurant at Witham celebrated The Year of the Tiger and we were jolly lucky to get a superb table in this very busy restaurant. The food was fabulous, the banquet covered many wonderful tastes, tea smoked chicken, king prawn with crispy rice paper, fillet pork with a soya sauce and pickled Chinese salad and that was just the Hor's D'oeuvre. To follow was the biggest and most succulent Orkney scallops and crispy duck with pancakes which was everyone’s favourite! Just in case we were still a bit on the hungry side they were more dishes like the steamed linen caught sea bass, deep fried chicken with chilli, stir fried mixed vegetables with rice and prawns in lotus leaves and last but not least fresh lychee, toffee apples, coffee and tea. The highlight of the evening was a rather energetic Lion dance, a great celebration of the New Year and wishing everyone prosperity for the coming year. When just then we took some time for a slight break, Kim put on his apron and made us to see - hand made noodles. Others were encouraged to take part in this easy task but no one really succeeded in the finished product as Kim had done. If you have never been to this wonderful restaurant I do really feel that you have missed something in your lives. The food is always of the highest quality and the welcome, always the warmest. I can heartily recommend this restaurant; you have never had Chinese food like this outside China.

Lian, over the years has been such a wonderful place to spend an evening with friends. Kim has always been so welcoming. We took our, now adult, children a month or so ago and Kim made our evening very special. They loved it when they were young and love it as much now. My brother is over from Mallorca this week and we are dining there again and can’t wait. The food is such high quality.
