Lian Restaurant Description
Located in a very traditional brick-built Essex gentleman's house this Chinese restaurant has achieved a reputation for excellence and high standards. They specialise in Pekingese and Szechwan cuisine, served in surroundings that are impeccably Oriental. One of their specialities is hand-carved vegetables, which strikes me as the ultimate sacrifice or extreme dedication. But very beautiful they are and you soon summon up the necessary sang froid to devour them. They also do excellent mornings when you can learn how to cook the proper way, followed by lunch, which is excellent value at £25. In the gastronomic desert which is Essex, with the customary notable exceptions, it is heartening to be able to number an ethnic cuisine amongst them.

We often order takeaway from other Chinese restaurants but nothing equals a night out at Lian with a group of friends. The atmosphere is relaxed and Kim is a funny guy. He obviously enjoys running the restaurant and talking to his customers. The choice of authentic Chinese food is breathtaking and of an extremely high standard. Dishes such as tea smoked chicken, and chicken and sweet corn wrapped in lettuce are just sublime. Steamed sea bass with ginger, Chinese mushrooms and pak choi braised in soy sauce are just the tips of the culinary iceberg. Just one word of advice on the banquet choices - the first course of starters are misleading in portion sizes at first glance. Believe me the food keeps on coming! I and six of my party, who are all big eaters, were defeated. The bill wasn’t bad at all.
