Linnet, The

20 Great Hinton, Trowbridge, BA14 6BU

The Great Makeover goes on and nowhere more so than at The Linnet where chef/proprietor Jonathan Thurby has transformed an ailing village local into a People's Pub, it has to be said in the nicest possible way. One of the lynchpins here is that wherever possible it is made on the premises. Such things as bread, pasta and ice cream are all home-produced. Ingredients used in the preparation of the dishes are fresh, purchased locally if possible and deployed with sensitivity. "Is there nothing wrong with this paragon of virtue?" do I hear you ask, to which the reply is quite honestly no. With a sensible compact wine list, menus to match, Wadworth's best on draught and decent house wine at £10.

REVIEWS OF Linnet, The

Annaanddanny (2 September 2010)

My husband and I have eaten frequently at The Linnet during the last ten years - whenever we want a treat! The food has been consistently excellent - from the selection of homemade bread and olives on the table as we sit down to the delicious soups and starters, wonderful mains, perfect vegetables and scrumptious puddings. The menu is short - and there's only one vegetarian option - but it is always an exquisite combination of interesting ingredients. It is not cheap but it's always a pleasure.

Markmyword (1 March 2009)

I visited on a Saturday evening in February when visiting friends in Wiltshire. It is now a restaurant rather than the local pub, it is a twee old building and on the small side. You walk into the bar area, which would feel cramped on a busy night; this is a place for ordering drinks and looking at the menu and not for hanging around. I found it rather soulless. There was an acceptable choice of wines in the £20-25 price range and some available by the glass alone. The eating area is on the other side and is pleasant enough, pleasing to the eye with the right balance for the lighting. On the downside the toilets are slightly obtrusive with three of the tables quite close to the entrance to the loos. The tables were stained and scratched and should have had cloths on for a restaurant standard. I would describe the meals as middle of the road and likely to be acceptable to the conservative palate with little continental influence, acceptable but not adventurous. Prices are on the high side; look for at least £30 plus per head without drinks. Would I go again? Probably not, it was okay but nothing special.
