Loch Fyne - St Albans Description

Whilst the 49 Loch Fyne restaurants have a shared background there is a welcome degree of individuality encouraged throughout the group, which makes for customer interest. If you like wholesome, fresh and reliable seafood caught and reared under carefully controlled conditions, well presented in unfussy surroundings, and you enjoy being well looked after by pleasant staff, Loch Fyne is for you.

There is an increasing awareness of other food staples with an extended choice of meat dishes, but it is the original fare upon which their success was created that prevails. Loch Fyne kippers, a fine bouillabaisse, braden rost, kiln-roasted salmon fillet, and the toothsome oysters on ice, with a selection of accompaniments, all are to be found throughout the various restaurants, as well as Glen Fyne 21 day aged rib-eye steak and Scottish smoked venison. There is invariably a well-travelled wine list available which is sensible, both in content and prices.

Loch Fyne's greatest achievement has been to prove to a sceptical populace that chains or conglomerates can be made to work in the eating-out public's best interests.

Fixed Lunch

  • £12 (2 courses + glass of wine)

Michelle (11 September 2009)

I went there on a Thursday night in September, and having never been there before was surprised at what a beautiful restaurant it was. The atmosphere is lovely and not too loud. My partner and I were seated by a Spanish waiter, couldn’t catch his name, and we waited for about ten minutes for him to take our order which was a bit too long. On ordering he apologised as they were one person down. He brought our food promptly, had a lovely friendly manner and really couldn’t do enough for us. We had oysters to start with bread; it was the nicest bread ever! For main course the crab seafood platter tower was so nice. Everything tasted fresh and flavoursome and the wine we ordered at £25 topped the clean and crisp section was really lovely too. I had a lovely evening and felt relaxed and nicely full afterwards, there was so much food, and they definitely don’t scrimp on the portions. Our waiter really made it for us though; he was friendly and efficient, even though they were really busy. We topped it off with an Irish and Calypso coffee. It was a perfect evening. The total bill was £82 which for all that food and lovely wine was more than acceptable. I would, and will recommend this restaurant to everyone I know and will definitely be revisiting it.

We visited Loch Fyne on Sunday lunchtime, good atmosphere and pleasant service but the food was very disappointing and portions were tiny. The fish soup had a good flavour but had no more than a few soup spoons full in the bottom of the bowl. The whole plaice was tiny and had no more than a couple of ounces of fish on it, side order of seasonal vegetables were uninspiring peas and overcooked broccoli, this at a time of summer when there is a huge variety of seasonal vegetables. We really had to go out for a meal again after eating the small portions and will definitely not return.
