Lockwoods Description
It is always refreshing to see a new restaurant that has evolved in line with the ethos of its surroundings, and of such is Lockwoods in the heart of the historic Cathedral City of Ripon, only a short drive from Leeds, Harrogate and York. Matthew Lockwood has a clear vision of where he wants his synonymous restaurant to aspire to, and traditional and contemporary themes move side by side towards that aim, reflected in the high quality décor, modern British and European menu, extensive wine list and the art that adorns their walls.
Lockwoods really is a restaurant for the neighbourhood, meeting the needs of all its clients, and offering exceptional quality at prices that will encourage return. Full use is made of the abundance of fresh produce from local suppliers and producers, everything from fine Yorkshire cheeses, herbs and local farm eggs to Yorkshire Cider.
The day starts with brunch, maybe streaky bacon and fried free range hen's egg or perhaps smoked salmon with scrambled egg and toasted brioche. A typical lunch offers an antipasto platter, a Caesar salad with chargrilled chicken, North Sea fishcakes with mixed salad, fries and aioli or one of a range of gourmet sandwiches. Lookout for the delicious field mushroom, walnut and blue cheese tart with beetroot chutney, simply bursting with flavour.
Amongst starters for dinner look for fresh grilled sardines with chargrilled focaccia and fennel salsa; rare smoked duck breast with parmesan, beets, rocket, and sesame dressing; or honey glazed goats cheese with tomato and rocket salad. Main courses can include a tasty ratatouille filled crepe with goats cheese custard; seared cod chunk with little saffron and shellfish stew; crisp belly pork with mustard mash, morcilla and buttered spinach, or an aged ribeye with béarnaise sauce, fat chips, watercress salad and caramelized shallots.
Lockwoods does a nifty line in pizzas, including a seafood version with chilli and coriander, and their pasta carbonara is a model of its kind. Desserts can yield treacle tart with ice cream, chocolate pot with strawberry fool and shortbread, and an outstanding white chocolate and rhubarb tart. Not to forget the Lockwoods selection of finest English Artisan cheeses.
In keeping with the neighbourhood motivation a childrens' menu operates at lunch and evenings with a menu that is not condescending and prices that are kindly. Similarly, there are a number of vegetarian choices, and vegan and gluten free options are available on request. On special occasions such as Mothering Sunday, Lockwoods rise to the occasion offering a tasty traditional menu with a contemporary twist, complemented by live and relaxed jazz in the background.
There is a regular programme of events, centred mainly round music, food and wine. Beyond the restaurant itself Matthew and his team will cater for your private party leaving you free to get on and enjoy it. And if, having enjoyed your meal at the restaurant you want a reminder to take home ask to see the coffees, wines and cheeses they have on sale.

Your Reviews of Lockwoods

We took a trip out to Ripon last week from Harrogate, and were delighted to find Lockwoods. The restaurant feels light and fresh with a combination of old character from the brick walls and modern touches in the lighting and seating. Very comfortable and intimate, with friendly and efficient service, we didn't want to leave! The food was great also. I had the Marleys aged rib eye steak which was succulent, and the brioche and butter pudding. My wife had the English fishcake, and the wonderful selection of local cheeses. There are also vegetarian options, a children’s menu, and an interesting wine list. We will be back!

Had a fantastic meal on a Wednesday evening, the place was lively and full of atmosphere. Food was superb, your info says the food is slightly more upmarket in the evening. Very misleading it was SUPERB, excellent, will go again time after time. By far the best food in Ripon, the Chef does really know his stuff, very seasonal and simple. Service was friendly and very efficient, the coffee was excellent. 10/10
