L'Ortolan
Church Lane, Shinfield, Reading, RG2 9BY
The Michelin starred L'Ortolan is located in the beautiful Thames Valley, and is easily accessible from Reading, Oxford, Heathrow, and London. Dine in the restaurant or enjoy a more exciting theatrical experience by sitting at the Chefs' Table watching them at work, followed by a drink in the terrace conservatory. Owner and Chef, Alan Murchison has within this gorgeous listed building, kick-started a new approach to dining and the results have been outstanding. The à la carte, applaud-worthy yet uncomplicated, includes a line of modern French dishes that are eventually served in excellent presentations. The likes of poached lemon sole, with fragrant Thai broth and tempura of squid along with confit of organic salmon, pickled cucumber, grapefruit and samphire feature on the menu. The Michelin starred L'Ortolan is located in the beautiful Thames Valley, and is easily accessible from Reading, Oxford, Heathrow, and London. REVIEWS OF L'Ortolan
Joplings (3 April 2007)
We experienced the 'Chef’s Table' at L'Ortolan last week, what an experience, a once in a lifetime event. All the food was fantastic, wines were fantastic, staff were fantastic, all was fantastic. Alan is a top bloke and it was an all round superb dining experience. L'Ortolan is the best place we've every eaten and the best wine we've ever had. The staff are so dedicated and proud of the restaurant. You must try it, you will return.

Thank God for L'Ortolan. Just when I was thinking of curbing my eating out comes a restaurant to awaken the taste buds. The July special set Laurent Perrier Lunch including a glass of champagne at £25 is a bargain. Excellent food cooked with class. The addition of small chef tasting courses (free) included in the set lunch were amazing. Small? Yes but, enough for you to crave more. The small cup of mint and pea soup with truffle oil was divine. Starters of quail salad and smoked haddock risotto were spot on. Mains of Moroccan style lamb with couscous and chicken ballotine with risotto and truffle oil were dispatched with glee. A dessert of dark chocolate fondant with poached cherries looked & tasted superb. I can also recommend the extensive range of cheese served with walnut bread or mixed leaves if you ask! Only minor quibble, one of the three mains in the set lunch package had run out at 1pm. Maybe an alternative should have been added! Is this a place for a special occasion? No, this is so special it should be used every day! See you there!
