Lyttelton Arms Description
It is a wonderful surprise to find a pub that has firmly grasped the gastro nettle in and around the Midlands, with pretty sensational results that include demonstrably freshly cooked food and a high zing factor. The Lyttelton Arms has all the inherent charm of a traditional country pub that has come face to face with its history, adapted, and lost none of its appeal in the process. In close relation to the Clent Hills it takes its name from the Lyttelton family whose home at Hagley Hall is close by.
The pub is truly a place for all seasons, and the menu reflects this as it embraces not only the seasons but also the atmosphere within, ranging from cool chic in summer to the cosy warmth of a winter's day with the hatches well battened down.
To set the right note of fashionable sociability there are sharing plates, Spanish tapas of Serrano ham, manchego, sardines, chorizo and tortilla, a baked Camembert with rustic bread, Greek mezze with taramasalata with humus, tzatziki, feta and flatbread, or a pizzette with garlic, rocket and Parmesan.
Amongst the starters, touchingly referred to as 'little dishes', there is freshly made soup, grilled asparagus with poached egg, parmesan and rocket, crab cakes with mango, chilli and coriander salsa, or caramelised onion tart. Look, too, for Black Pearl scallops when the market is right. The salads - sorry, that should read 'leaves' - offer a traditional Caesar salad with chicken, marinated anchovies and parmesan, or for the seafood fiends some seared prawns with chorizo, chilli, spinach and lemon crème fraiche. A recent addition to the menu is the delicious coconut chicken, with spinach, coriander, mango chutney and chilli salsa.
These days no self-respecting gastropub can afford to be without its pizza range; expect to find a classic margherita of tomato, mozzarella and basil, or the challenging diavolo spiced chicken with peppadew peppers, chilli and tabasco. For those who like to build their own pizzas you can, for a modest sum, add to the basic dish with a choice from chorizo, olives, jalapenos, mushrooms, spring onion, or bacon. Or of course the whole lot if you're feeling that way. Pastas include fettucine with salmon, prawns, coconut, spring onions and chilli, chef's choice risotto, or penne with crab, tomato, and pepperonata. For the big event there is always a fish of the day on request.
The steak burger with Swiss cheese, bacon, relish and fries is popular, a sign of the times and improving taste in eating, as is the Moroccan lamb cutlets with saffron potatoes, chorizo, peas and mint. For hearty eaters there are good fillet steaks with horseradish Chantilly, green beans and frites. A wide range of supporting dishes includes buttered new potatoes, Belgium frites and mayo, and greens, leeks and peas. For those who have to be lashed to a plank to induce them to eat root vegetables, try them here, honey roasted and altogether different from the all too often pallid steamed variety.
For desserts resort to the blackboard, where there is always a good display, often with some of the local cheeses to set the buffs alight.
There is a good balance between Old and New World wines, and champagne is always on call. There is also a fine selection of beers in stock, ranging from standard lagers to European speciality beers such as Leffe and Erdinger as well as the noted Timothy Taylor Landlord.
There is a smoking area in the bar though it is a totally non-smoking restaurant, and they benefit from outside seating on a large external patio for up to 150 guests; it is also worth noting that they have a function room that can seat sixty, and also a bar area that can be hired separately that can accommodate a further eighty.
But like any other place where people come to enjoy themselves it's the people who look after then that count. Their attention to detail, their warmth and hospitality are the qualities that count and turn a good pub into a brilliant one. Make a point of meeting them at The Lyttelton Arms; before that, to get details on their menu and much more, why not have a look at their Website? Our experience was overall a good one, having been there just for drinks we decided to try it for a Saturday evening to eat. Although we were told when we booked that the only available time was for 6pm we found that when we arrived there were lots of vacant tables and they were still vacant when we left some two hours later. I would hold out for a more convenient time in future. We were hoping to have my husband’s 40th celebration there this weekend but after having booked for 18-20 people were told some 20 minutes later there had been a double booking and a party of 16 had already been booked in! This is a shame as since we have eaten there we were sure that we had made the right choice, you don't get a lot but that is because it is a 'gastro' style pub.
On saying that, my first choice of food was undercooked in the middle, grilled swordfish, I sent it back to finish off and although it was not raw when returned it was still inedible for me. I was offered another choice even though my husband had already started eating his meal, I ordered rib eye steak and this was done to perfection and very enjoyable, although I was eating alone at this point!! Still the pleasant surprise was, without request from us, the Manager came to our table and apologised personally and explained that although they had run out of rib eye that they were 'hijacking' another customer order for me to have rib eye, when the bill arrived they had not charged for my meal either!! So overall without the hiccups I would give this pub 9/10 overall for food and service and friendly staff in the bar and restaurant areas.
