Your Reviews of Madras Restaurant

Being Indian, we are very fond of South Indian food, especially dosa. When we reached Madras after a tiring walk from Balckheath Fireworks, we were very disappointed with food, service and price. To be honest, it did look like a restaurant run by some cowboys. I’m sorry for all those who eat there, but it is not South Indian food at all. It’s all made up food which is too oily, over priced and moreover, the staff is ignorant. For example, I ordered idli, the guy who was serving us came up with two idlis and one vada, instead of all three idlis, and said they were short of one idli, hence the vada. No apology, no regret. I just walked away. All orders were placed on wrong tables and we ended up getting too many dishes, which we hadn't ordered. And on top of everything no apologies to us. I asked him for a bottle of beer and he gave me an already opened flat beer bottle, which tasted horrible and I had to leave it on table. I called upon the staff and he was no where ready to listen as if he didn't understand English. After everything we got our bill, which was rounded off to £50 for some suspicious reason, and upon calculations I found it to be £45.80. I would never ever recommend anyone to go there. Also the toilet and wash basin were as dirty as Lewisham station toilets.

I have eaten here many times during the last year. The vegetarian and rice dishes are fabulous - ranging from good to amazing depending on who's cooking. WONDERFUL dosais, took an Indian friend who raved over the dosai and rasam. Haven't tried the meat dishes (just because I love the veg) but did try the chicken biryani which was dreadful!

The service is slow and wobbly, the staff could benefit from a bit of training but they are charming and entertaining (without realising) especially once they know you. The decor has a lot to be desired but it is truly a real gem and a favourite of mine.
