London's most venerated coffee house, conveniently situated between a strip joint and a public house goes back a very long way. Essentially a patisserie it continues to produce old favourites with comforting certainty at affordable rates in a continental atmosphere. Don't expect any frills or sophisticated décor but do make sure that you don't miss the Maison Bertaux Theatre Club's performances of small plays, held from time to time in the patisserie. Light meals and snacks are a distinct possibility, even if the occasional eccentricity of the service leaves you feeling momentarily neglected.

My daughter and I stumbled across this lovely little place in April on an amble through the streets. We had cheese croissants and tea and they were fantastic. We were going to go back but didn't note the street name and so couldn't find it again, but now thanks to the internet, I now know where to go-phew. Next time it will be cakes all round, the place is also great for celebrity spotting, saw two famous types in the short time we were there (sat behind us) - highly recommended.
