Malabar Junction

107 Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3NA

Malabar Junction is an Indian gastronomic oasis in the heart of Bloomsbury. Spread over two floors, the restaurant offers authentic Cochin, Malabar, and Travencore cuisine, all from the beautiful south Indian state of Kerala. A lower-ground floor dining area is open for lunch, serving affordable set meals, while the main ground floor restaurant offers more relaxed evening dining in an elegant glass domed interior. Although not a vegetarian restaurant they do have a separate vegetarian kitchen with chefs specifically designated to one or other kitchen. Vegetarians adore the spinach vadia, ghee roast dosa, and uppuma, while fish fans could opt for the Cochin prawn curry, wonderfully complemented by tapioca; tangy crab thenga curry, or the fish moilee, a rich stew with green chillies and turmeric.

Other choices such as chicken varutha curry, lamb olathiyath, and Malabar biryanis rarely fail to please.

Desserts are fun and hearty, pazham pori or banana fritters with cream, and vermicelli in cardamom flavoured milk delight the taste buds. A well-mannered list of wines, beer and champagne leaves little to be desired.

REVIEWS OF Malabar Junction

Sam (25 February 2005)

Great Indian Food. I was visiting from the US. I haven't eaten such authentic Kerala food. Service is excellent. Got to try the fish curry. Keep it up.
