Malik's

High Street, Cookham, SL6 9SF

The elegant purlieus of Cookham are not, at first thought the sort of place one might expect to associate with Indian cuisine. But then Malik's is not your run-of-the-mill Indian restaurant. Dishes show every evidence of care and precise preparation with old friends well to the fore, though plenty of culinary adventures for the more daring. The Sikandri lamb, which has spent the previous forty-eight hours marinating is a real eye-opener and ought to qualify for a signature dish, if they had such things. Service is professional and the supporting effects have been given close thought. House wine at £13.95. Please note that the E-Mail Contact is for enquiries only, not for bookings.

REVIEWS OF Malik's

Mike (10 February 2009)

I arrived at Malik’s ahead of my guest. On arrival the head waiter looked at me as though I had two heads and no 'good evening' or any other similar greeting was offered. I told him my name and then he promptly disappeared and I wrongly assumed this was to prepare our table. He then returned, took a take away order from another person and only then showed me to the table. He did not offer to take my coat until I ask him to hang it somewhere. The food was good but below the standard I had expected, especially when taking into consideration all the award plaques on prominent display throughout the restaurant. The service I can only describe as invasive and downright rude. The waiter, who thought he was the cat whiskers, had no idea about clearing tables and practically pushed you out of the way to get to the empty plates. The bill came to £83 for two, we did have a bottle of wine for £18 plus two gin and tonics, but I still felt this was a little steep. The bill was finally presented in a script I could hardly understand. The waiter remained poised at my left shoulder whilst I checked the bill, a habit I find intimidating. Shortly afterwards our coats were dumped on an adjacent chair and I took this to be a hint that we were no longer welcome. The only time I saw the staff smile was when we were departing. I will not be returning.

I had a very disappointing meal there last night. I have been going to Malik’s for a long time and always enjoyed it, but recently the standard has gone down. The service was poor and when we refused to pay the whole of the service charge that they add on to your bill, we were spoken to in a rude manner by a member of staff.
