Manor House Inn, The

Having survived its ordeal by fire, Chris and Moira Brown's old farmhouse by the Derwent Reservoir looking out over the Pennines has been restored and looks, if anything, better than before.

This is a pub with eating as a high priority. Meals are served in the bar or dining room from the same blackboard menu and the food is a nosher's delight. Given that the air in those parts is prone to cause a vigorous appetite, you will not be disappointed, and traditional dishes such as Cumberland sausage and mash with mustard sauce vie with juicy king prawns in spicy sauce.

The bread and butter pudding follows much the same pattern of tried and trusted dishes. If you choose to ignore the excellent range of local beers on offer there is a copious list of some fifty wines, with house wines at £8.95. For this robust excellence you will by no means be overcharged, indeed you may feel tempted to return pretty darned quick.
