Manze's

204 Deptford High Street , London, SE8 3NT

Thanks to a handful of restaurants such as the family-run Manze's, England's age-old traditional dish of jellied eels, pie, and mash has proudly entered the 21st century and stars on many English menus. Manze's is among the city's oldest surviving eel pie and mash houses that has been open since 1891. Although the dish is not as popular as it was before, Manze's still offers succulent jellied or stewed eels, and mince beef in handmade pastry pies accompanied by a choice of gravy or a traditional British parsley sauce called liquor, and potatoes peeled, cooked and mashed on site. Vegetarians can enjoy pies that are created using minced soya. Tea, coffee, soft drinks, and hot or cold Sarsaparilla are always available.

REVIEWS OF Manze's

Terry Mc Carthy (20 March 2011)

I am now 72, my mum first took me to Manze`s during World War II, and she told me that her mum took her there when she was a young child. I introduced all my three daughters to Manze`s, and it is still wonderful. I am a bit sad now, that Deptford only opens three or four days a week. When I was a teenager, I could still get a ‘Pie and Mash’ at ‘Manze`s’ after the pubs closed at 10.30 PM. I still treat myself to a special ‘2 and double mash’ whenever I can get there. Wonderful!

Manze’s at Deptford, High Street is simply the best pie 'n' mash Shop in South East London. George and Val are the most welcoming of old and new customers alike. The interior is a proper traditional pie shop style, complete with marble booth tables and sawdust on the floor. As for the food, well, it’s gorgeous and always cooked fresh and steaming hot. You could choose from the plain and simple menu of pie, mash, eels and liquor all washed down with either tea or cold drinks. If you love this type of food or simply curious, then please sample Manze’s in Deptford.
