Mar I Terra - Blackfriars

14 Gambia Street, London, SE1 0XH

A little bit of Spain tucked in amongst the grottiness and railway lines south of the Thames and an ideal refuge for those who note with dismay the relative lack of such places in this sceptred isle. Perhaps we instinctively prefer to have them in loco, there to greet us as we step off the plane. Here in Southwark you can savour most of it without the inconvenience of the trip to the airport even. Flavoursome plates of tapas come in various forms, none costing more than £6.50. The menu has meat, vegetable and fish dishes, wonderful omelettes, all served in a homely and unfussy manner that matches the mood of the whole place. A wide selection of wines, mostly under £20 completes the picture.

REVIEWS OF Mar I Terra - Blackfriars

Pauline (16 October 2008)

We went to this restaurant close to Christmas 2007 with some colleagues who were doing Spanish evening classes. It was chosen by our Spanish teacher who didn't want us to be disappointed with alleged Spanish food. It was a brilliant choice. The place was heaving. The service was swift, and excellent, and the range of food was huge and delicious.

Amanda (18 July 2004)

An easy going, friendly group of 10, we visited Mar I Terra last week. By the time we left, we were truly astounded that the place is still operating. The "Head Waiter" is one of the rudest we've encountered, bullying staff & customers alike. We were informed that we had a set menu (we had not been told this on booking) and what followed was a variety of unappealing, non-fresh tapas that had definitely seen better days. No music, no fun & a definite no, no for a return visit.
