Marco Polo Restaurant & Bar

33 Dean Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 1PQ

One of the most respected restaurant names in Newcastle is Marco Polo, acquired by new owners towards the end of 2005, and now once again a brand leader for Italian cuisine in this thriving and vibrant part of the UK economy. The changes generally seem to be welcomed by the Geordie world, who for many years have regarded Marco Polo as a small but highly robust piece of Italy in their midst. Gone is what one refreshingly candid fan described as the 'spit and sawdust' feel, to be replaced by that much abused phrase, an air of sophistication, with ample use made of strong colours, notably red, dark wood, and trendy lighting The overall effect is certainly more of the times in which we live, and the food is as good as ever, so who's going to be fussy about the décor? Perhaps one of the charms about Italian cooking is its predictability.

Perhaps one of the charms about Italian cooking is its predictability. Not that everything is always the same, but there is a delightful consistency that is only broken by something completely different. The famed antipasti, a selection of Italian meats, cheese and vegetables is a sort of tone setter that reassures, and fires up the tastebuds. There can be few more Italian dishes than a Caesar salad, though sad to see anchovies are not included. Quite essential in my view, but then I felt the same about Bombay duck before it disappeared from the menus of most self respecting Indian restaurants.

REVIEWS OF Marco Polo Restaurant & Bar

Vivienne (3 November 2008)

I had been to Marco Polo quite a few times for the evening meals. The restaurant interior is great and their service is good. The menu offers a variety of dishes and the food is delicious. It is good value for money and I would recommend them.

Lynn Nicolson (12 September 2008)

Travelling from Scotland after a very long journey and having not seen my good friend Pat for about a year, she decided she would take me for a special meal to a restaurant in Newcastle. It was a disaster and we walked out. Being a restaurant owner in Scotland this is not something I would normally do, so it had to be bad. However, Marco Polo’s being directly opposite was where we two very upset young-ish ladies went to recover and did so admirably. The ambiance and welcome was red hot, the staff were genuine, smart and eager to please. What about the food and drink? Well it was magnificent. Our requests for a seafood dinner evolved perfectly with amazing king prawns and tender scallops followed by fresh cod washed down with a bottle of chilled Prosecco. This meal was fit for a king and certainly hit the spot, but when the bill arrived we could not believe how reasonable it was. Well done Marco Polo’s for getting it just right. Thanks to the Restaurant Manager Matt and his band of merry men for a wonderful evening that could have been a friendship disaster. We will be back. Lynn Nicolson – Scotland and Pat Jamieson – Newcastle.
