Market Restaurant Description

A real survival in the heart of the city centre this engaging little restaurant is well-known for many things, not least the quality of its English food served on ancient china, very often in gargantuan helpings. This could be kedgeree coquettes with mango chutney to start, followed by the totally delicious Parsnips 'Molly Parkin' (sorry, no information) consisting of baked layers of parsnip, tomato, Gruyere and cream. The range of beers is legendary not only for their extent but also the quality of their care. House wines start at £7.95 for a 50cl carafe.

Your Reviews of Market Restaurant

Joyce (6 September 2006)

I have been coming here for years, but lately the standard has kept slipping as the prices have risen. The food is really not as good as it used to be and the wines (booths) have gone up rather too much. After much soul-searching, we have decided to call it a day for the Market, the only problem is knowing where to go next.

I think the beginning of the end was a few months ago when the price of the fillet steak increased and the portion shrunk by about a half, and an 'all American chicken dinner' (read chicken breast from a run of the mill farm, small pureed corn pancake and naff sauce) was twenty quid including veg. The hummus with lamb was also a let down, being available round the corner for less than a third of the price at the excellent Cedar Tree. We are also tired of the same things popping up on the menu time and time again.

The couple who run it are as charming as ever, but one does wonder if they are either blissfully unaware that the restaurant is becoming stale (who could blame them, with all the accolades), or are they rubbing their hands together? I don’t know, and i shall never find out, which is a shame, but I really have had enough.
