Maze

London Marriott Hotel, 10-13 Grosvenor Square, London, W1K 6JP

Gordon Ramsay's latest foray into the restaurant world was never going to be run of the mill, and the Maze restaurant at the Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square certainly confirms that forecast. From the drawing board of American architect David Rockwell, he of the Grand Central Station to name but only one other achievement, the 90-seater restaurant is a rich assembly of hand-crafted luxury suitable for the unusual menu that head chef Jason Atherton and his team have dreamed up - not so much unusual in its content but in the way it is structured. So what's on offer? Slow roast quail with walnut purée and pickled lemons, white bean and Madeira sauce to start and roasted fillet of Gloucestershire beef, with griotte onions, artichokes and bacon and cep purée to follow.

For pudding many may find the peanut butter and cherry jam sandwich a new and delightful experience. This is Ramsay doing what he's best at, inspiring a team of his making to produce accurately a menu that bears his stamp and ingenuity.

REVIEWS OF Maze

Jackie (26/09/2007) (27 September 2007)

We dined at the chef’s table in the Maze kitchen last night. What a brilliant experience. The service and attention to detail were impeccable - we felt like royalty. Sitting in the kitchen definitely made the evening (I wouldn't want to sit anywhere else). It was fascinating watching the smooth running of the kitchen and feeling part of the buzz. It definitely gave a different perspective on dining out. As each of the twelve courses was presented, a different chef arrived to talk us through the preparation. The food combinations were interesting, and mostly they worked for all of us. My only criticism was that after twelve of them, it all felt a bit rich, but then you expect a lot for your £110 or so a head (before wine). The chefs and staff were extremely friendly, even when we were interrupting their busy work. As you would expect everything was beautifully presented. All six of our party have quite different palates/foodie likes/dislikes, and we were unanimous in that. We all want to do it again-soon.

Brilliant, exciting and vibrant restaurant. I was fortunate to get the chef's table and the food was delightful in every respect. We asked for an emphasis on fish, and were blown away by the array of dishes that followed, with so many different flavours to stimulate the taste buds. The wines, recommended by the restaurant, complemented the food perfectly to make it a memorable afternoon. It is another winner for the best chef in London.
