McCoys at The Cleveland Tontine
Staddlebridge, Northallerton, DL6 3JB
When the McCoy brothers bought the Tontine in 1976 it was in a terrible tumbledown state, but despite that disadvantage they were soon awarded "Restaurant of the Year" courtesy of Egon Ronay, a huge accolade for a Northern restaurant in those days! Since then it has gone from strength to strength, winning almost every award in the book, but, most importantly, sending generations of happy diners home, either from its more informal bistro and snug, or from the main restaurant. They describe the restaurant as 'Slightly faded elegance is the thought here - bit like a bordello, in fact. Chandeliered, gilded and fenestrated with wooden louvres the room twinkles at night and is heated by candle. When the McCoy brothers bought the Tontine in 1976 it was in a terrible tumbledown state, but despite that disadvantage they were soon awarded "Restaurant of the Year" courtesy of Egon Ronay, a huge accolade for a Northern restaurant in those days!

Dishes in the restaurant could include chicken liver terrine with tomato chutney and brioche bread or king scallops with caviar, beurre blanc and sweet onion purée to begin with. Followed by marinated corn fed chicken with buttered spinach, white bean and ham puree and mushroom jus or fillet steak with wild mushroom sauce.
Leave room though for puddings - chocolate marquise, sticky toffee pudding, crème brûlée or cheese.

REVIEWS OF McCoys at The Cleveland Tontine
John Gibbins (22 November 2010)
Where better to celebrate one’s 65th birthday with friends. Over the thirty-four years, we have dined there, the standards have remained impeccable. But that hardly covers what you get in atmosphere, dedicated and knowledgeable service, and sheer professionalism. You can discuss food with the owner if you are lucky.
Fish lovers like my wife and daughter enthuse at the delicate flavours. She enjoyed a seafood mezze, then confit of salmon for a main course. Wow! I had a magnificent black pudding with a sauce to die for, followed by mouth-watering roasted beef with Yorkshire pudding with gravy of the gods - it was Sunday lunch! Our guests left totally clean plates with murmurs of satisfaction, repeated after tasty puddings. We left at 16.15 leaving the warm fire and hearth that could have been located in rural France. My only fear is that Eugine McCoy may retire before I die. We have never had a meal less than wonderful at this place. Spoiled for choice, it still manages to satisfy. Only the Blue Lion at East Witton and the Hare a Harome are in their league. Keep it up please, all of you staff, you are doing a magnificent job in keeping me happy.

I’m not really sure why I’m writing this. The reason being if you have eaten here before you will most certainly agree it doesn’t come much better. But if you haven’t then its about time that you did and see for yourself just what you have been missing. Great food, great staff and wonderful atmosphere! It has nothing to do with carlsberg but possibly the best.
