Mercer, The

The monochromatic décor gives The Mercer in Threadneedle Street a decidedly upmarket, professional and masculine finish, while also exuding the atmosphere best suited to its neighbourhood. Formerly a banking chamber, this restaurant located in the heart of the city's financial district is a British rendition of a typical Wall Street hang out. Only, it's much classier and brims with confidence.

Sandwiches, fried eggs and grills compete favourably with muesli and juices in their power breakfast menu. For starters, try the roast wood pigeon salad with pancetta pink grapefruit and move on to the more substantial Mercer pie, made with rump steak, mushroom and soaked generously in London Porter ale. The summer pudding sundae with vanilla yoghurt and shortbread provides a fitting finale. The wine list is extensive and covers English, Italian, Spanish, and New World choices, available by the glass or carafe.
