Abode Glasgow opened in December 2005, in a city that could certainly do with a new look at the way in which hotels are provided and run. This one is located in the unpromising sounding former Department of Education Office, and retains many of its original elegant features, if not its purpose.

The street-level restaurant aims to offer the best regional produce, which in the case of Glasgow is very considerable, the second city of a country loaded with quality ingredients, not least those provided by a coastline of just less than 10,000 kilometres. From the kitchens of Michael Caine, he formerly of Gidleigh Park, expect to find starters pumpkin and wild mushroom risotto with mascarpone and pumpkin oil, or a consommé made from langoustines and scented with basil.

Main courses in a Scottish hotel would hardly be de rigeur without some good Aberdeen Angus beef fillet on the menu, in this case topped with choux farcie with roasted shallots, wild mushrooms and a red wine sauce. For desserts look no further than the delicious cranachan soufflé with honeycomb ice cream for company.

For less formal occasions Abode Glasgow hosts the MC Café Bar, where more simple food can be enjoyed in relaxed surroundings. Live music makes a frequent appearance.
