Michael Caines at ABode Glasgow Description

abode glasgowThe irrepressible Michael Caines, who seems to be fuelled by a very special brand of rocket juice, has extended his presence in Bath Street, Glasgow to include a bar and grill where the difference between the various lifestyles is recognised, so that the Abode style prevails above stairs, and a rather more cosmopolitan regime gets on with it below decks. BarMC has its own street entrance and is a fabulous new day and night venue that combines a late-night lounge bar with a modern grill restaurant open day and night. A well, as being first and foremost a grill it does have the odd overtone of brasserie, and much of the foods could be described as 'comfort'.

There is nothing elaborate or 'heavy' about the food downstairs, just satisfying and filling dishes at lunchtime, and grill menu with burgers, steaks and market fish of the day. Starters of chilli and ginger crab cake with baby spinach and lemon butter sauce, or fresh local mussels with pac choy, green curry sauce and grilled garlic bread. Sharing platters monitor on Greek or Italian tapas type food, but the real McCoy is the grill, with all their beef and lamb from the Castle of Mey estate from the Caithness coast. The mixed grill is unbeatable, their lamb cutlets just the tops. All their grills are served with garlic field mushrooms, roast tomatoes, chunky chips or new potatoes with watercress and a choice of sauce.

Fish pie with a substantial mature cheddar cheese 'roof' does not stint on the fish, and the grilled whole plaice tastes as fresh as the day. There is also a masterly brunch menu, and where better to while away the Sabbath morn catching up on the news and gossip whilst toying with eggs Benedict or some smoked salmon and scrambled egg, backed up with a brace of Bloody Marys. And as for the cheeses, well, we'd be here all night. Just try the smoked Cairnsmore, a sheep's milk cheese from Newton Stewart, matured for ten months

For those in a rush, and Glasgow is no different from any other major city, there's an express lunch with a choice of starters, main courses and desserts, all available within the hour, every day. The price? I don't know how they do it.

Come the end of the day, you have enjoyed a ravishingly good meal, yet the day still feels young, so move along to the bar and while away the rest of the night, or as much of it as you can spare before the skies begin to lighten in the east.

Your Reviews of Michael Caines at ABode Glasgow

Tony Edwards (6 November 2006)

A rather cramped and awkwardly shaped room, unfortunately overlooking a boarded-up building, covered in fly posters. This hardly created the refined, relaxed atmosphere obviously aimed at. Food is competent, if depressingly “corporate” - I am not sure the company franchising this fully trusts the chefs in the kitchen, so the interesting dishes had a hotel food feel, except for an excellently presented starter of roast mullet. Saddle of venison was nicely pink but drowned out by too many berry fruits; roast quail was too dry. Worse of all was the rice pudding dessert - I think they were afraid it would not come nicely out of the mould and so had included too much gelatine. (Too much? Why gelatine at all in rice pudding?) The service was exceptionally pleasant and attentive and the wine list, obviously corporately put together, offered reasonable choices at decent prices.
