Millbank, The Description
Not quite the sort of establishment one would expect to find in the middle of muck and brass country, this trés chic conversion of a Yorkshire pub, presided over by Glen Futter, formerly of the then three Michelin starred Chez Nico in London. A large decked area offers pretty sensational views of the distant Pennines with opportunities for al fresco eating on the right day.
Essentially the inspirational skills come from the city, the materials from the surrounding countryside. Starters might include belly pork in honey and cloves with roasted turnip, baby onion and garlic, or salt cod and new potato sauté with Jerusalem artichoke puree and Catalan pesto. A main course of Lancashire-sourced roast suckling pig with garlic mash, bok choi and oriental sauce induces a wonderful combination of flavours, hotly pursued by saddle of hare with potato pie and plum sauce. A banana and walnut sponge is in keeping with the up to date approach. A comprehensive wine list offers an international choice with wine by the glass from £2.50 and champagne at £4.95, the latter always a good sign in my experience.

Calling in on our way back to Staffordshire from Leeds having checked out the 'Good Pub Guide' we were thrilled to have dropped on a most perfect place for a relaxed and delicious meal. The batter on the fish should be listed as a national treasure, perfect! Not only that but we did not have to leave our little dog in the car; she could come into the 'snug' or, as we did, out onto the lovely outside eating area. Just wish we lived closer, we'd be regulars.

I live a 5 minute walk from the Millbank so get tempted on a regular basis to indulge in the gastronomic delights contained within it. So because I have the willpower of a Labrador I can honestly say that during my many visits I have never had a meal which was anything less than perfect. With good beer, fantastic gardens to sit in and probably the best photographs ever taken hanging on the walls, it really is a top restaurant. The menu may sound expensive but I have often paid these same prices for rubbish food in mediocre restaurants. What I want for a 40 meal is well cooked, tasty, visually attractive and imaginative food - something that I would never dream of cooking myself. If you also want that then go to the Millbank.
