Mr Thomas's Chop House
52 Cross Street, Manchester, M2 7AR
For those familiar with Winchester I would presume to draw a certain parallel between the Wykeham Arms and Mr Thomas's Chop House. When Robert Walker invoked the first stirrings of Edwardian décor with the dying embers of Victorian splendour he bequeathed us premises that have come down to the present day to delight and console. The British lunchtime menu is sheer bliss. The wine list itself is exciting enough, but lean back and enjoy also the privilege of a wine waiter, emphasising the fact that as a customer you are appreciated and heard. The sort of place where it's all too easy to meet congenial company and let the hours slip by as you discuss the real issues of life at the expense of some of the things you had, until then, thought were important. For those familiar with Winchester I would presume to draw a certain parallel between the Wykeham Arms and Mr Thomas's Chop House. REVIEWS OF Mr Thomas's Chop House
Boo (5 January 2010)
The food here is traditional and done well; it has a much better atmosphere than its sister restaurant Uncles Sams which is probably due to the welcoming and helpful staff which Uncles Sams could greatly benefit from.
L. Bowler (31 May 2007)
Worth going for a 'one-off' to view the decor and get the 'feel' of this old town house pub. Attentive service, and varied trad style menu. Disappointed that the less expensive options on the wine list were all sold out by 7pm, so had little choice. Food was well presented and fair portions, but certainly not large. The price was a little over what I would expect to pay for similar elsewhere, so you are really paying more for eating at the venue itself. My usual pet-hate of tables being too close together was very much the case here... we had a couple either side of us who didn’t really compliment our time there. One was very loud and drunk ... the other insisted on commenting and tutting at the price of the wines with us and staring intently ( and very closely) at our food as it was served and we tried to eat in peace. Obviously this is not the fault of the restaurant, but it could have been avoided a little if the tables had more than just a few inches between us. Overall, worth going for a good quality (not great), traditional style meal in an unusual setting. By the way, ALWAYS BOOK - it is exceptionally busy and we had to wait twenty minutes for our pre-booked table to be available, so you would have very little chance if you just turn up.
