In the reign of Queen Victoria someone hit on the rather original notion of joining two half-timbered cottages dating from the 1500's, adding a bell-tower and a mews. The result, renovated in 2000, is moated Langshott Manor, only eight minutes drive from Gatwick. Insulated from some of the grosser sounds of 21st century living you relax into a past age as the cares of the day are dined away by a cuisine which relies heavily on local produce and offers such delights as smoked bacon soup, pan-fried Cornish red mullet and creme brulee such as you dream about. A somewhat expensive wine list is about the only cloud on the horizon, with house wine at £17.
