Mulberry Tree, The Description
More than few will share the view that a Les Routiers seal of approval is not only reliable but also produces some welcome surprises, often where you would least expect them, The Mulberry Tree is no exception and, presided over by Mark Prescott, a Roux-trained exponent of the art, this former pub has assumed a new identity and a name for dependable food. The bar and lounge area does a roaring trade at lunchtime and for less formal meals such as very good fish and chips, most in generous proportions, whilst the dining room produces a more ambitious menu for those with time to spare. Think in terms of Avruga caviar and white truffle oil with cream of cauliflower soup and roast lamb rump with crushed new potatoes and sauce choron. The wine list fields some 50 or so from all over the world, many under £20, with a special list for those who fancy a bit of exploration and have the means to back it.

Your Reviews of Mulberry Tree, The
Ben (26 August 2008)
We've eaten at the Mulberry Tree on a number of occasions, the last of which was about one month ago, and have always had a great evening and an occasional lunch. Everything I've had there has been excellent, although for dessert I nearly always have the chocolate melt pudding, which is worth the visit alone. It's interesting to note that most of the negative comments on this place are to do with the speed of service. I can honestly say that I've never found the wait for my food to be unacceptable, particularly for a quality restaurant. I think that people have become used to going into pubs that microwave or deep fry everything so it can be ready in five minutes. I prefer my food freshly prepared and cooked with a bit of care, and it's certainly worth the wait.

Although still serving high quality and well cooked food, this restaurant is let down by slow and unattentive service. The staff seem unaware of their customers presence at times. Astonishing for a restaurant of such repute, and the 10% service charge added to every bill is I feel undeserved. If we want to add a service charge we should have a choice.
