Mussel and Crab Description
Hardly what you expect to find in Nottinghamshire, but then the sea really is pretty close to us all, and seafood is a predominant feature of the menu, as you might expect. Bruce Elliott-Bateman, and Philip Wright at the stoves make an excellent and proven team. The décor is challenging as you switch from oak beams and open fires to another dining room decked out in Mediterranean style and colours.
Up to 22 blackboards promote the delights of such delicacies as crab bisque, oysters, avruga with swordfish to follow, or escolar from Indonesia, or from nearer home with sole from Torbay, or a Cromer crab, the sweetest of them all. Deliveries are frequent, usually from Brixham. For determined carnivores the king-size mixed grill comes as something of a relief, and in season there is game from the surrounding estates.
The wine list is extensive and well-geared to the menu. Perhaps the final touch for the gentlemen is the plastic cistern in the wash room, complete with live goldfish. Who said that eccentricity was on the decline?

It’s very expensive for what you get; it’s a normal pub that does fish. I had lobster and it cost £20 for half. Our bill for four of us including drinks came to £171. I will not go again.

We have been meaning to try the Mussel and Crab for quite some time having heard nothing but good about it. The service was friendly and prompt. The surroundings are pleasant and quirky. Overall I thought the food was okay to good. The breads and roast garlic were good, however the one large crab cake was a bit odd, the famous seafood stacks were quite impressive and tasty and the chowder was very good.
The main course was a disappointment, i.e. the frozen peas and seemingly frozen chips-they were classier than you are average frozen chips though. Overall the mains were okay, nice fresh fish simply presented. The biggest disappointment was the puds, the pavlova wasn't actually a pavlova, some sort of merangue and mousse concoction that tasted bought in, the filling on the lemon merangue was also quite miserly.
So overall a bit disappointing considering the price £140 for four with one and a half rounds of basic drinks included. I think overall a bit more focus is required on food details.
