My Big Fat Greek

16 Elephant and Castle, London, SE1 6TH

Greek food has never really inspired me much in the past, and many restaurants ? apparently serving their version of it ? have totally failed to impress me, especially their lack of authenticity, somehow feeling that a full helping of music from Zorba the Greek, plenty of houmous and taramasalata from the nearest deli and pictures of blue sea will suffice. However, along has come My Big Fat Greek to break the mould, whilst it has a more modern look than is usual, large tables with plenty of space around them and a comfortable atmosphere the most important fact is that it has a genuine, really experienced Greek chef serving real Greek food. Their meze is so plentiful that it is almost a meal in itself, a whole series of small plates with strips of pitta bread featuring most of the classic dishes, however, they contrive do everything a bit better than normal, their calamari for instance are lightly dusted in flour instead of being covered in thick batter and don?t taste as if you are chewing a piece of rubber.

Stars of their menu are the marinated, charcoal grilled prawns, larger, fresher and more lightly cooked than normal, while their specialities are a whole selection of meats, kebabs and fish cooked on a grill using actual charcoal, ensuring plenty of flavour.

You can also expect to find traditional choices like moussaka ? with a vegetarian option as well ? dolmades, vine leaves stuffed with minced lamb, rice and herbs, kleftiko, slow cooked lamb with tomatoes and seasoning and finally keftedes, meat balls like you have never experienced before.

Whilst Elephant and Castle is not exactly the first place to come to mind if you are thinking of eating out, My Big Fat Greek ensures that it would not be time wasted and your stomach would feel well satisfied as well without any tears from your wallet either.
